From our previous show, Yared Nigussu had originally planned to be a part of the competition, competing with Olga Rybalko, however, he had to pull out of the last show. Now, he’s back and ready to paint with Dave Stevens! If you’ve been following this show, you might be wondering why Dave Stevens is painting with Yared and not with Michael Abraham, well, the reason is because Michael was offered an amazing opportunity to further his career as a visual artist in California. He was invited to exhibit at the L.A. Art Fair and schmooze with art collectors and gallery owners in the area. So, we fully supported him to take the plunge there, and to replace him, Yared stepped in.
So, who is Yared Nigussu, you ask?
Yared Nigussu (Yared N) is an Ethiopian artist from Addis Ababa. He studied at the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Arts and Design, and graduated in Art and Education with major in painting in 2005. He then was awarded a scholarship to France where he taught art, and was involved in many exhibitions.
Yared N is best known for his large-scale paintings and colourful palet. He first focused on faces, since he was fascinated by them. He spent day after day observing human faces, inspired by the beauty of shapes and focusing on human gazes. “Eyes can hide a lot of stories… That’s an infinite source of inspiration for me” he says. His most emblematic piece is that of a child soldier, that he created after the tearful confession of a friend. This painting shows the sadness and the desperate look of a child whose childhood has been stolen.
After moving to Canada, he was very much impressed and inspired by urban perspective. His extensive travel in Europe, mainly in France and Austria, gave him different perspective on architecture, resulting in creating dynamic cityscapes reflecting the fast motion of urban world, the speed of our hectic lives.
Yared’s work has been exhibited in France, Austria and Canada, and is now widely collected internationally. He exhibits at the Kurbatoff Art Gallery and resides in Vancouver, BC.
