Hovey Eyres was born in 1993 in Victoria, BC, and is an artist and performer who lives and works in Victoria, BC. She studied Visual Arts at the University of Victoria and graduated in 2016. She has performed live painting for the Royal Society of Canada, at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC. In 2014, she received the Jamie-Cassels Undergraduate Research Award.
Hoveys’ drawing practice is concerned with how today’s generation constructs their identities online. Referencing pop culture imagery, including Instagram selfies, Youtube videos, and Tumblr photos, Eyres creates highly detailed drawings with ballpoint pen. Her methodical drawing technique and compulsive process mimic her subjects’ obsession with their self-image, and expose issues such as individualism, materialism, and an over-emphasis on beauty and physical appearance. Intricate drawings invite viewers to be aware of their relationship to social media and examine the underlying messages behind its imagery.
In addition to performing and sharing her art in galleries, Eyres maintains a social media presence where she uploads photos of her drawings. This perpetual relationship between the online and material world continues to influence her work.
